August 21 & 22 - Alpine Saint John BBQ Festival - 11:30 AM - 6:00 PM. Exhibition Park, McAllister Drive, East. August 21 & 22. The Summer's Ultimate Family Event ! Saint John is going hog wild this summer when the first annual Alpine Lager Saint John BBQ Festival hits the city. The event will feature 20 to 30 BBQ pits, serving up a large variety of BBQ specialties from around the world, as prepared by restaurants and caterers from the area. A huge tent will provide ample room to sample food favorites and live entertainment. The festival grounds will display culinary delights and will also serve a number of exciting activities, such as Toronto’s Infinite Fantasy Circus Family, and Flyball Dogs, who will be showing off their agility and speed. Interactive displays will be featured throughout the site. Live entertainment will be provided during the day by Top 40 New Country artist “Kevin Chase” and international recording artist and former Canadian Idol Top 11 Finalist “Dee” amongst others. A Saturday evening “Blues & BBQ” Beer Garden is a separately ticketed show for age 19+ and will feature Thom Swift & The El Caminos, The Carson Downey Band, and The Matt Minglewood Band. Admission to the grounds (except the Blues & BBQ, which is separately ticketed) is reasonably priced at $5 per person or $ 10 per family and food will be available between $ 2.50 and $ 10, giving everyone a chance to sample as many different food items as possible. Now that summer is officially here, they are looking for your gently used books all summer until the sale dates, Monday to Saturday, August 23-28th. If you have up to 3 grocery bags of books to donate, you can drop them off at area Sobeys stores in the marked bins at the front of the store. If you have more than 3 grocery bags of books to donate, please call the Big Brothers Big Sisters office at (506) 635-1145 to make alternate arrangements. They are accepting all types of books except encyclopedias, textbooks and magazines. August 29 - SJ Dragonboat Festival - 8:30 AM - 5:00 PM. Renforth Cove, Rothesay. St. Joseph’s Hospital Foundation and the Telegraph Journal present the 6th annual Saint John Dragon Boat Festival. Over 1,000 participants will compete in exciting 200 meter races that run throughout the day. On shore, local musicians, dancers, and cultural performers will entertain the crowds. Kids will have fun with crafts and games and everyone will enjoy the exotic foods at our international market place. Sept 12 - Hampton 5-Miler - 8:00 AM - 1:00 PM. Hampton High School. Road race hosted annually by the Hampton River Runners. Open to all with a 1k children’s race as well, website www.hamptonriverrunners.ca • 8 am-9:30 am: Late Registration and Parcel Pick-Up at Hampton High School. 9 am: Kids’ Kilometre Run (12 years and under). 9:45 am: Start line, race briefing. 10 am: Race Start, near Hampton High School. 12:00 noon: Post Race Receptions / Awards. Ceremony at Hampton High School. Light lunch will be provided. * Showers and facilities are available at Hampton High School. * Babysitting is available inside the school 8 am-12 noon. Sept 12 - Carlton Showband Reunion Tour - 7:00 PM - 9:00 PM. Imperial Theatre The Carlton Showband is reuniting this fall for a series of concerts that will take the legendary Canadian band across the country one more time! Featuring original band members Freddy White, Aaron Lewis, Gregory Donaghey, Roddy Lee, Robert Benoit and Larris Benoir, the Carlton Showband will perform their ONLY concert in New Brunswick at Imperial Theatre! Formed in 1964, the Carlton Showband’s popularity skyrocketed when the band appeared on CTV’s Pig ‘n’ Whistle Show in 1967. For eleven seasons, the television program was one of the most popular and longest-running shows on the network and the Carlton Showband became the most popular band of its kind in the country. This performance takes place in the Fort Reliance Auditorium at Imperial Theatre.
